Dance Injuries

Dancing is a good exercise and a great way to stay physically fit. However, if you are a new dancer, the range and speed of body movements can put you at risk of dance injuries such as sprains and strains. Knowing the risk factors and taking precautions may help you to prevent a dance injury. Some of the risk factors of dance injury include poor fitness, posture, overtraining, and hazardous environment such as hard floors.

Common Dance Injuries

Most injuries are the result of overuse rather than trauma or severe impact, and tend to affect the foot, ankle, lower leg, lower back, and hips. These areas are very vulnerable to injuries, including tendon injuries, fractures, sprains, and strains. Dancers who are older are at higher risk for injury, so it is imperative for young dancers to take the necessary precautions to prevent future injury.

What Causes Dance Injuries?

Dancers are exposed to a wide range of risks for injury. Some of these include:

  • Duration, intensity, and frequency of training
  • External conditions such as hard floors and cold studios
  • Equipment, such as shoes
  • Individual health history
  • Nutritional deficiency, eating disorders, or lack of nourishment
