What Are Some Causes of Headaches?

Hormones

More women than men suffer from headaches as a result of hormones. Such headaches are caused by female hormones and can include menstrual migraines or hormone headaches.

Tyramine

Certain foods and drinks contain ingredients that can cause headaches. One well-accepted trigger is tyramine.

Sleep Deficiency

People who do not receive a sufficient amount of sleep are at a higher risk of headaches. Improved sleeping habits can reduce migraines and headaches.

Weight

Overweight children and teens are more likely to have more frequent and severe headaches.

When Should You See a Doctor?

You should schedule a doctor’s visit if you experience headaches that:

  • Occur more frequently than usual
  • Are more severe than usual
  • Worsen or don’t improve with appropriate use of medication
  • Interrupts your daily life and performing in normal activities
  • Becomes painful, intolerable, and difficult to ignore
