Migraines Q & A

What are migraines?

Migraines are a type of headache that’s accompanied by other symptoms, many of which involve your senses. Some signs that you’re having a migraine, not a simple headache, include:

  • Seeing flashing lights or colors (aka, an aura)
  • Losing partial or total sight before an attack
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light, sounds, or smells

Migraines last longer and occur more frequently than regular headaches. If you’ve had at least five headaches that last from 4-72 hours without treatment, you have migraines.

What are some treatments for migraines?

Migraines are difficult to treat. You may find relief with over-the-counter pain relievers meant for headaches. Some people find that regular acupuncture treatments reduce the number and severity of their migraines.

However, migraines tend to worsen over time. Many people with migraines eventually go on to develop chronic migraines.

What are chronic migraines?

If you suffer from 15 or more headache days per month and at least eight of those headaches are migraines, you have chronic migraines. More than 3.3 million women, men, and children in the United States suffer from chronic migraines.

What are some treatments for chronic migraines?

The doctors at Spine Center and Orthopedic Rehabilitation of Englewood, PC, offer FDA-approved Botox injections for migraine headaches. Medical professionals have used Botox for more than 10 years to reduce the number and severity of migraine headaches. Botox is a preventive treatment, which means that you get your injections before a headache begins.

How does Botox relieve chronic migraines?

The active ingredient in Botox is a neuromodulator called onabotulinumtoxinA. Using a very fine needle, your doctor injects Botox in prescribed sites in your head and neck that are proven to be associated with migraine pain. The neuromodulator blocks pain signals in those areas, preventing about 8-9 migraine days per month and reducing the pain of the headaches you do get.

How long does it take to get Botox for chronic migraines?

Each Botox for migraine treatment takes about 15 minutes. You start to notice a change in the number and severity of your migraines after about four weeks.

To maintain your benefits, you should get treated every 12 weeks. Most insurance plans cover Botox for migraines, but be sure to talk to the Spine Center and Orthopedic Rehabilitation of Englewood, PC, office staff to verify that your insurance includes Botox treatments.
